Reham Aarti Jacobsen - Mixed media mosaic (See sample pictures here) -
Reham's mosaicking career officially started in 1998 when she was unexpectedly whisked off to Berkeley, California, to take a private lesson from the renowned mosaic artist, Dmitri Grudsky, of the former Soviet Union. Since that time, she has spent countless hours developing techniques in her current passion mosaics. She uses several kinds of tesserae in her work: stained glass, ceramic tile, beads, mirror, china, and glass pebble anything she can adhere and grout to a stable surface.
1. Reham was born and raised in Kuwait and was fortunate enough to have a wonderfully artistic family. For Reham, her uncle Mussa Aarti was the most influential person of all because he is a master of mixed media, as she hopes to one day be. She now lives in Boise, Idaho, with her son Shahien , stepson Preston, and her sister Batul.
Because of her global upbringing, Reham tries to bring aspects of other cultures into her work.
She loves to make large, colorful, stand-out pieces that seem to go over very will with children.
Reham likes to take an active role in her community, donating art to fund raisers, and doing art projects with area schools. Recently, she started a program to do mosaic work with the children in the St.Luke's Hospital oncology playroom. The program was so popular with the kids that she created a "cubby" full of supplies for the children to mosaic at will. She is currently working together with the BSU Women's center to host The Bra Project, an event to benefit breast cancer awareness and prevention.
Reham's first book "Mosaics for the first time" was released in March of 2004, a project she completed while opening her retail shop Mosaic Essential. The shop is a "Build your own mosaic" store, where customers can learn proper mosaic techniques and build their own mosaic art projects, as well as being a supply and studio space resource for local mosaic artists. Recently Mosaic Essential moved to a new downtown location, in the heart of Boise's art district. Reham is also a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA, http://www.americanmosaics.org).
Reham regularly exhibits in such events as "Women in the Arts" and "The Bra Project", as well as being featured in various local galleries, gift shops, and private collections.
